Labyrinth
What is a Labyrinth?
A Labyrinth is an ancient winding path that is often seen as a metaphor for life's journey. Mindfully walking a labyrinth creates rich experiences that range from soothing to enlightening to deeply transformational.
A labyrinth is not a maze. That is, there are no dead ends or trick turns, nothing to figure out. Traditionally, a labyrinth is a single, two-dimensional pathway that winds from the perimeter of a circle into its center. There are several ancient labyrinth designs and many modern interpretations.
The intention with which one walks the labyrinth makes all the difference in one’s experience of the journey. Guided intentional walks are rich experiences for groups or individuals, although there are no "rules" for walking a labyrinth - you can approach one prayerfully and with reverence or playfully, and hop, skip, and jump your way down the path!
There is a growing world community of lovers of the Labyrinth, creating many varied opportunities for people everywhere to experience the peace, harmony, and healing the labyrinth's sacred geometry promotes. Geomancers (the Western World's version of Feng Shui) say that Labyrinths are healing for the Earth. Dowsers say that water domes frequently form where Labyrinths are placed.
Labyrinths are being used in places of worship for meditation, in hospitals to promote calm and healing, and in conflict areas to facilitate peace and reconciliation. A group labyrinth walk is a unique way to celebrate a rite of passage in life - a special birthday, wedding or anniversary, retirement, graduation, memorial service and more. |
